As the UEC examination is around the corner, the Academic Affairs Department arranged a Senior UEC Seminar for English subject. This seminar was held by Edulink on 28th October 2023 at the Tan Sri Lim Geok Chan’s Auditorium. This seminar was conducted for Senior 2 and 3 students. The aims of the seminar were to provide a comprehensive overview of English Language examination papers and to help students to effectively prepare for their UEC examination. Overall, there were a total of about 160 students and 12 English teachers attending the seminar. The presenter Ms Janice Goh, who is one of the question setters of the UEC examination for English subject, conducted the seminar.
The presenter overviewed both Paper 1 and Paper 2 for English Language by providing constructive and comprehensive guidance to students. She reviewed the five different genres of essays: Persuasive, Discuss, Expository, Causes and Effects, and Compare and Contrast. Besides discussing the mark allocation for essay and summary writing, she provided topics and sample essays for the different genres to get students’ feedback and corrected their mistakes instantly. The presenter also discussed scoring tips and highlighted the common mistakes that the students need to avoid in essay and summary writing. Apart from that, the compelling tips and techniques that were given to answer Paper 2 which contains sections such as Critical Reading, Comprehension, Error Identification and Word Forms were very beneficial for students to prepare for their UEC examination.
Last but not least, the presenter guided the students on how to start their revision. She stated that by learning and completing the exercises in the UCSCAM textbooks, UCSCAM workbooks and past year papers will definitely help the students to produce good results. Additionally, she introduced some of the educational platforms of her own and other platforms for students to learn how to engage themselves in educational games such as Kahoot and Quizizz to enhance their knowledge. This section was amusing as the students actively participated by answering the questions and trying to compete with their friends in scoring higher marks. Teachers also engaged themselves and gave it a try. There was a question-and-answer session throughout the seminar which enabled the teachers and students to clear their doubts regarding the English Language examination papers. The seminar has indeed helped the students to boost their confidence and to get them ready for the upcoming UEC examination.
