On the 10th of February 2023, three classes of senior high school year one (S1ST, S1AF and S1AH) students had the privilege to attend a talk on the various places of interests in the United Kingdom which was organised specially for them in view of the learning topics which they will be covering from now onwards.
Organized by the English Language Department, the talk was held at Dato’ Chua Chon Wee J.P. Auditorium. Mr Joshua Archileas Hills, a young British speaker and a law graduate from North Hampton, was invited to present about the various places of interests in the U.K. The talk lasted for an hour and twenty minutes, consisting of explanations and descriptions, Q&A session, singing of a song by the Beatles and a photo-taking session towards the end of it.
The talk saw a good and positive response from the students who were willing to try and speak up in English language by asking questions which reflected their deep-rooted interests of the British culture and heritage.
It was truly an eye-opening experience for the students to be exposed further to what they have been learning and will be learning in the near future, and to cultivate a deeper sense of interest in the English language.
How do the students feel about this event? Let’s find out!
Ong Yi, S1ST
“We learnt about the historical background of England, the monuments, different kinds of wildlife as well as tourist destinations. To illustrate a few: the Roman Bath, Stonehenge and the Scottish Highlands. I personally feel that the part about U.K.’s wildlife was the most interesting of all. Those wild rabbits, otters, sheep and foxes are all so adorable! Besides, the legend about the Loch Ness Monster was interesting too!”
Chow Suhui, S1AH
“The speaker is energetic and good-looking. The talk was insightful with all the information provided being very precise as well.”
Lee Kuan Ler, S1AF
“This event provided a wonderful opportunity for my classmates and myself to learn more about the historical aspects and nature of the U.K., especially the fact that the talk was given by a British who is able to share his experiences in a genuine and friendly approach.”
